If it's genuine, I think it would be Scott #7H, which is rose red. This stamp, issued in 1864, is distinguishable from an 1863 printing by the shape of the C in Centavos. The 1863 issue has a broad C; the 1864 issue has a narrow C. Yours looks like the latter. That said, the note in my catalog says that both the 1863 and 1864 issues of the 5C stamp have been extensively counterfeited.

Hi, that would be Scott# 7H, no idea on the color, there are at least four different. This issue has also been extensively counterfeited. Best I can do from a scan. I type too slow.

Thank you both for your reply.
Do you know why this particular stamp is counterfeited so frequently? Is it of significant value?
Would you recommend having it checked out by a professional to authenticate?

2013 Scott value if genuine is $225+, if unused, $32+ if used. Those would be for 4 margined examples, I believe. Why counterfeited, greed?

It is one of the common Lange forgeries first made in the 1870 after Lange lost his contract with the government. He took the last design (narrow C) and redid the plate (because he wasn't allowed the keep the official plates) and printed lots and lots of them in each value. I believe they were reprinted many times since then, and it's not even too awful difficult to still get full sheets. Typically the Lange are easy to tell, both because they used different papers and they started pretty worn.
Here is a genuine in close to the same color:

And another in a different shade:

Thank you for the info. That is very interesting, maybe Lange printed a bunch of forgeries out of greed and spite.

There are certainly plenty of the Lange forgeries out there. It seems sometimes that if a collection has any of that design, they will be the Lange...
