Hi Everyone - I was going through a mixture yesterday and came across this Gambia stamp. The watermark doesn't look like either of the possible watermark types described in the Scott catalog (Wmk.2 and Wmk. 2 but sideways). Any ideas? Thanks.

Looks like you have a stamp from the edge of the sheet with the manufacturer's watermark on it. I understand the confusion! If you can lift the hinges on the back, you may see the proper watermark.

A note in the Gibbons Commonwealth Catalogue says that they are "...particularly prevalent on Crown CC or Crown CA watermark stamps."

I've just gone through the Gambia page in SG and it states:

The above (referring to 1886-1893 Wmk. Crown CA sideways) were printed in panes of 15 on paper intended for larger panes. Hence the watermark is sometimes misplaced or omitted and letters from CROWN AGENTS FOR THE COLONIES (their caps) from the margin may appear on the stamps.

This may help you place your stamp more accurately. There are two shades: brown and deep brown.

You may possibly see the waterrmark better after soaking the stamp to remove the hinge!
