Beautiful and meticulous study. I am guessing the rest of the collection was pristine. |

There was also a brown shade with a write-up that included several sources. I want to send to Vincent Graves Greene for further remarks, if any. I will post later when I'm in the office. |

Lovely set and organization. I do know these can oxidize to varying degrees giving all sorts of shades so would be ruling that out before sending in one of them. I have some that don't even look orange anymore.
Now you just need to get some pages like that filled with the 8c :) |

stamps101 Quote: I do know these can oxidize to varying degrees giving all sorts of shades so would be ruling that out before sending in one of them I did take this into consideration as I've seen the result of oxidation frequently. Here is the stamp below: I don't know who the original person was who together this presentation, so I can't be sure of the credibility of the report. If there still were documents out there from the postmasters in 1887 or a copy of Mekeel's Weekly Stamp News, it would help. VGG may have something in their library, perhaps a longshot. I will do some digging when I have time. Here is another said to be on oily paper: ...and another already sold, with several pre-preprinting creases: ...and my favorite: |

Thank you for sharing this material Steve. While I do not collect Canada I can appreciate the effort and time that went into assembling this collection. Great stuff. |

Lovely collection, thank you for sharing, someone spent time and money assembling that group.
If I may share a few things to consider:
1) The imperf, though it has large margins, is only usually certifiable as such when a single tied to covers or in multiples when off-cover. Perf spacing was all over the place on the issue, especially in the later printing period.
2) The "oily paper" may just be bleed-through from ink. Is it a rose carmine shade?
3) Some of the earlier orange red and dull red shades sulphurette and brown when exposed to moist air. The same happens to 3c stamps issued in period. I wonder if your brown example is simply the result of storage conditions, and the phenomenon observed in the late 1880s due to the issue of old stock. I think I see red in it, also I see this possibility has been discussed.
4) Your stamp with the arced "REGISTERED" - I think I've seen the cancel with a small crown above. |

archerg Are you thinking of this one? The curve is in the opposite direction. I believe it is a Halifax Registered cancel. |

Thanks, Wert. That's why I posted it. Everything I get gets sold off on the website. I wanted this info stored as a collection here before breaking it up. Steve |

Wondering if oily paper means aniline? It would glow under UV if aniline. |
