I am specializing in the WF's and the Definitive Series of 1922. Yesterday I was kicked out of at least two FB groups because I correctly pointed out that a stamp that was for sale (Coil Waste #579) in one of the groups had fake perfs! I guess that some of these groups have the same administrators. First of all, I am curious as to what I can do to get back in, but second, I am now looking for other FB groups that may cover my interests on the above topics if I am unsuccessful. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Contact one of the admins for the group(s). Make your plea but remember that FB groups are owned by the person(s) that started the group. The moderators are probably volunteers and they may not be consistent in dealing with members. |

In the third quarter of 2020, Facebook's net income amounted to almost $7.85 billion U.S. dollars.
They do not 'charge' for a FB accounts; do not folks wonder how they are making billions of dollars? At what point do we wake up and consider that our information belongs to us and stop allowing Big Tech companies to treat us like a product they can peddle like a widget? Don |

Thomas is actually the one who kicked me out of both groups mentioned above and to add insult to injury, I personally sent him a message as to why he did since other members also stated that the stamp had fake perfs! |

Off-topic Quote: At what point do we wake up and consider that our information belongs to us and stop allowing Big Tech companies to treat us like a product they can peddle like a widget? I tried to write something but was told it's forbidden. Haven't the foggiest clue why. In short, I wrote that these big companies are private, owe us nothing, hence we can make no demands of them while we accept their free service. |

I don't support Facebook for this and many other reasons. It's all about harvesting your data and making money. |

Not to mention that big tech wants to be your information filter and "guardian". What rubbish. |

There are philatelic Facebook groups that have some value and they are mobile friendly. I am no big fan of Facebook and not the end all but just another venue for information. Even stamp forums use ad revenue to supplement expenses and often based upon browsing history. |

Many organized crime families make charitable donations but that does not mean that they should be supported. FB makes plenty of noise about supporting racial equality but the sad truth is that less than 6% of FB employees are black (and less than half of those are working in higher paying technology jobs). I know of no philatelic forum which can influence Washington or elections like Big Tech. The only way to get the attention of Big Tech is for user support to stop and that is what I have chosen to do.
I am surprised that APS supports FB. When Big Tech fails (just like the 19th century Railroad tycoons and monopolies it ultimately will) APS will be negatively impacted by its support of it. Don |

Quote: The only way to get the attention of Big Tech is for us to stop supporting them Someone said that "people that use free products - become the product". As long as valuable and useful apps are given free - there will always be a demand and users. FB and Twitter offer you not only their platform but more importantly, their members. Immigrating to another messaging app or social media, without your connections and friends going with you, will harm you, so you're a captive member of such companies. |

Quote: ...As long as valuable and useful apps are given free... So if a crime organization gives away free groceries, they can can commit extortion or run drugs in a community? Don Edit: I agree that 'free' is a seduction, for me the question is more about when Big Tech's influence and control will be fully understood. |

Ideally or practically? The mafia in Italy often helped out the community, and earned their respect and support. That's a fact. |

If my family is hungry, then groceries are important. But if my family is dead from the local violence or my son dead from illegal drugs, free groceries matter little.
It is a question of looking past the 'free' and asking yourself 'why?'. Is the intent to be charitable or is the intent something else?
For example Big Tech companies like FB, Google, and Twitter all saw huge jumps in their income during COVID. It was worth billions of dollars to them to scare people and keep them at home. So what was their intent when they ranked COVID searches and communicated information? Were they performing a charitable service or were they making money? Don |

Additional info... Google's China revenue is growing exponentially each year and is currently north of $4B, last year FB made $5B in China. They have bigger market-share to grab and more money to make in China than they do in non-communist countries. Each of us can decide for ourselves what their intent might be.
Comparing this community to FB or other Big Tech is a stretch. But it is true that this forum is commercial, it is also true that non-commercial philatelic websites are not common. Stamp Smarter is one example of a truly non-commercial free website. This is perhaps why I am sensitive to the word 'free' being used for commercial sites like FB or Google; they are as far from 'free' as you can get. Don |
