It's much of a noob question and I just came in wonder, what's the best way?

I had tried with acetone with totally defaced the stamp or the postmark. I later discovered that warm water would do the job quite well but on some stamps, it makes the stamps feel softer and just doesn't feel right.

So, you expert, what would you do? What's the best way to remove a self adhesive using household items?
