In my stamp catalog the number RB42 is missing. It skips from RB41 to RB43. however I have found a site listing it as an actual stamp. So my question is.. is there really a RB42 ? Thanks Brian

Quote: In my stamp catalog ... Can you give us a little more to go on? What publisher and what year? RB42 is listed in my 2017 Scott Specialized. |

Very frustrating, I was making proprietary stamp album pages for the stampsmarter website but it looks like I am at a road block. The last thing I want is to have something missing. I assume there is probably more missing from this catalog as well. |

shame on you 30 dollar catalog. You'd think for 30 bucks it should of came with all the numbers. Maybe they had to save money on ink. Ok, I'm done complaining now. |

For U.S. material, especially back-of-book material, you only want to be using the Scott U.S. Specialized Catalogue. Nobody uses Harris or Brookman for reference purposes, outside of some FDC listings in Brookman. Get yourself a U.S. Specialized from 2010 or newer, and you'll be set with respect to major numbers. Some of the varieties which have been added since then have had letters added to listings. Here's a 2015 edition for about $32 shipped on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2015-Scott...dQH&LH_BIN=1Here's a 2016 edition for about $25 on Amazon (choose the lowest price option): https://smile.amazon.com/Specialize...8767&sr=8-12 |

John, Yes, a very good reason.
An answer to your question may be (I don't know why the OP is doing this other than they would like to freely give something back to the hobby) is that page layouts are personal. For example, Stamp Smarter pages have images for every stamps and Steiner pages do not, some collectors like images on album pages and some do not. Don |

Some catalogs are really pricelists. Brookman is one. So they leave out the really rare and expensive varieties since they don't have them in stock and are unlikely to get a request for in any case. |

Thanks for your responses everyone. I am going to purchase one of these specialized catalogs you have pointed out. As far as why I decided to do this? there are a few reasons. yes, there are way better options but many of these cost money that alot of the younger generation doesn't have. If it was not for the stampsmarter website and the free U.S. album pages and the tons of free knowledge I would have never started collecting in the first place. So I thought it would be nice to have those pages accessible on the site for free as well. Also wanted to do something in memory of my dad. Documentary pages next? Haha off to ebay I go. |

I think the real answer to your question is that the catalog, album or other reference you are using has skipped listings for the rarest or most expensive stamps. Scott RB9, RB10 and RB42 are all priced at $3000 or more, with the values in italics to indicate that transactions are rare as well.
Proprietary stamps at the time were issued in increments of 5/8¢ to support the tax structure of the day, so 5/8, 1-1/4, 1-7/8, 2-1/2, 3-1/8, 3-3/4, 4-3/8 and 5¢ were the low values. At 4-3/8¢, RB42 was the 7th level, which was not commonly called for. Upon the change of watermark, 4-3/8¢ RB59 is the high price value in the next set (50¢ for the 3-3/4¢ RB58, $20 for RB59, and $4.50 for the 5¢ RB60 in 2016 Scott).
RB42 exists, no doubt, but I have never seen an example. Durland does not even report the plate number that was used to print RB42 and RB59. |
