Ringo, I was thinking along somewhat similar lines. If an expertizing agencies grading includes the integrity of the perforations in their calculations then they are putting themselves in an awkward position grading a stamp's perfs as being 'perfect' with selvage attached as one can never know what the perfs will look like until the selvage is removed, especially on older stamps with more brittle paper. Of course they could be scissor trimmed, but is that also frowned upon?
Scissors and stamps are always frowned upon, unless it's the post office cutting up its 1d black sheets. Isn't the only relevance of stamp-edging to a grade whether an item contains information - eg a plate block number - and has been hinged in the edging?
It's funny but I'll bet if someone posted only the sans selvedge image and asked the group about the stamp, a lot of people would say "Those perfs on the right look funny. Could be a reperf job."
