Another one from the bottom of my pail of pucks and stamps.

I find this interesting in that it is cancelled but where is the stamp?

Can anyone help me learn more about this before it disintegrates please?

BTW Anyone else think that back then people wrote beautifully?

Thank you

A lot of the stampless covers of that period have various handstamps applied. Not all the German states had postage stamp issues or usage at that time. This one appears to come from Bavaria which did have postage stamps in 1859, but perhaps still accepted stampless covers and perhaps the 13 Jan. 1859 handstamp over the "franco" indicated that the fee was paid.

I'm sure that other members specializing in this time period can be more definitive.

Wurzburg
According to Tiepelo.

Painting of 4 continents.

This may be an official/governmental letter. The "Franco" marking indicates that the cost of postage has been paid.

Yes, and I think that back then schoolchildren learning to write had a very strict teacher with a long stick standing over them!
