What Happened To The Post About The Ebay Dealer Sales Analysis?

I am curious about a post/thread that seems to have disappeared, which was about analysis/estimates/opinion on ebay sales from some ebay sellers. Very interesting topic, but which was limited to the reported ebay information on sales available.

Was it pulled for some reason?

Some people pushed back and Bobby decided that it was not worth it.

The push back was just wrong, and some people made totally incorrect legal and ethical claims; I tried to keep things straight but obviously failed. If anyone had bothered to search online, they would have quickly found out that there is an entire 3rd party industry established that does nothing but provide sales and seller analysis based upon all ebay 'sold' data. (Simply search for ' ebay sales analysis'). ebay not only publishes the 'sold' information publicly, but they provide developer tools (both free and paid version) that allows the sales/seller data to be pulled from their databases. Many companies have paid ebay to have deeper access to their databases and you can pay them to 'see how your sales and prices compare to your competitors on ebay'.

So the push back was inane, the same sales and seller analysis is not only sanctioned by ebay but they have turned it into a profit center.

In my opinion social media is a total mess; it is now common that people will push back and get opinions they do not agree with scrubbed. This community is not immune to the same thing that is going on in other social media venues.

I am sorry, I thought the thread had value and I do not support bending to push back that was clearly wrong.

That sucks. Not surprising though. I get regular contact from a headhunter and they were just banned from Twitter because they took a position against a $15 minimum wage. They are not political. They are a corporate employment agency. Banned from Twitter. Scary times we are in. Once you give in a precedent is set for the next time and eventually it is all over. Everyone knows what happens when you give in to a screaming whiny five year old. They scream and whine more because they have learned that they get what they want.

I've run a music forum since 2002. Threatening emails are an expected part of owning a message board. I've had numerous bands and record labels threaten lawsuits because I allowed people to post negative reviews/opinions of a particular band or album.

My response: "Send me a formal request for removal on the letterhead of a law firm with current standing to litigate and I'll consider the request."

In almost 19 years, only one single entity has ever followed through with a formal request in writing, and I honored that request. All the others were just bluster from keyboard commandoes hiding behind the anonymity of the Internet.

The problem is that once you set the precedent of capitulating, word gets around that you're an easy mark and will bend to pressure, no matter how invalid it might be.

Sometimes the easy way out in the moment isn't the correct approach, IMO.

Then again, I come from the perspective that 99% of the time, bending the knee to (frequently manufactured) social outrage is the absolutely wrong thing to do.

But this isn't my forum, and ultimately the only opinion that matters is Bobby's, and we have to live with the decision no matter how much we might disagree with it.

I, too, wondered where that thread went. I 'contributed' to it and wondered if maybe I had something to do with its disappearance. I suppose I did, to the extent that any posters did. I agree with Don - I thought the tread had value, but I also wondered how long it would last with how it was going down a rabbit-hole that seemingly never ends well. Don's job here is hard - so many times the decision to intervene isn't exactly black and white. I am sorry to see the thread disappear, but I understand why it did.
