Good day,

Might I please have your opinions on this stamp that I placed in the spot for 62B in my album a while back?

I would guess, given what I paid, that I put it in there as a placeholder, but given the prices I paid for other stamps that I bought around the same time - among them a $3 72 - it's not impossible that it really is a 62B.

It is a tiny bit darker and less yellow than the two examples of 68 that I have, but only a tiny bit. I want to believe, but I can see the difference in color being due to surface abrasion / fading over time.

The one point that I've seen others note for most easily identifying the stamp, unfortunately, is missing. How else can I investigate this?

I'm not concerned about money here one bit. It's just that I stumbled across this great community and I would appreciate knowing one way or the other.

Whatever the case, I'm totally happy with what I have.

Thank you - Christopher

Sure looks like a 68.
And your cancel is a San Francisco "cogwheel" cancel

John,

Thank you so much for that information - I really appreciate it.

"Cogwheel", eh? I would have never guessed that - I had always seen it as a sun.

It's actually still really easy to definitively identify this stamp. It is a #68 and cannot be a 62B.

The dark line over "US Postage" and under the stars kinda gives it away.
