New York Times Article About Inverted Jenny Plate Block

Link to NYT article (subscription may be required). Discusses the upcoming sale of the plate block and also of the British Guiana One Cent magenta. These are being sold by Stuart Weitzman, shoe salesman.

Minor but jarring error, the C3A plate block is not from the 'corner' of the sheet.

Quoting Mr. Weitzman, age 79, from The NY Times article: "No one takes a U-Haul to the cemetery," he said. "We all have to figure out what to do with all of this stuff."

And, how to best do it.

For flat plate printed stamps, it should be a plate block of six stamps instead of a plate block of four stamps.

At one time, it was a plate block of eight stamps before it was separated into a plate block of four stamps.

Too bad they didn't separate it into a plate block of six since the leftmost two stamps were already separating.

Wow, the grammar in that "News7" article is atrocious. Hard to read even.

Here is a line...... "Robert G. Rose, the chairman of the nonprofit Philatelic Basis". While a foundation is a basis of sorts, they should have at least had someone to do basic proofreading. Bob Rose is chairman of the PF, of course.

Then there is this one: "The sheet of 100 was damaged up by Col. Edward H.R. Inexperienced, a fanatical collector whose mom was the stingy financier generally known as the "Witch of Wall Road."

I think the link to the free article (not to the NYT site) is something translated into another language and then back into English. Or so deliberately changed so as not to be a direct copy.

The original article at the Times site does read correctly.

For instance:

-- "The sheet of 100 was broken up by Col. Edward H.R. Green, a fanatical collector whose mother was the stingy financier known as the "Witch of Wall Street.""

-- "Green was the third owner of the sheet. For the first owner — William T. Robey, the stockbroker's clerk — it was the lucky find of a lifetime. He paid $24, the face value of the 100 stamps, when he went to a Washington post office on the day they went on sale."

-- "In 2012, 10 years after he had bought the double eagle, it was the centerpiece of a display at the Federal Reserve in Lower Manhattan."

If those are the only changes then it is probably not changed enough anyway to satisfy copyright laws. Still terrible.

The second article was prepared by software that read The NY Times article and attempted to substitute enough synonyms to generate a comparable article that would not infringe NYT's copyright yet be usable in an ad serving web page. Some of these "synthetic content generation" algorithms are horrific but the website operators do not care because if their synthetic headline in search results causes you to click into the synthetic content and see ads, their job is done.

Thank you for the explanation Chris. I have seen this type of thing before and could not understand what was going on.

Frankly I can't imagine that this is not infringement.
