This curious stamp depicts three men in a bobsled, modality that nobody knows that exist in Winter Games!

Rigel, good eyes! You have solved the mystery of why Yemen has failed to become a bobsledding powerhouse.

Here is the US issue of 1953 (Sc. 1020) marking the sesquicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase. James Monroe, Robert Livingston, and François de Barbé-Marbois are depicted in a sculpture signing the Louisiana Treaty in Paris on 30 April 1803.

Livingstone and Monroe were authorized by President Jefferson to buy New Orleans for $10 million, but Napoleon, Emperor of France, had directed Marbois, the French Treasurer, to offer the whole tract for $15 million.

Some say Monroe wanted to hold out for a set of Ginsu knives, but Livingstone took the land for the extra $5 million and the rest is history.

The stamp shows Prince Albert of Monaco and the physiologists Charles Richet and Paul Portier at right. In the center, the yatch Princesse Alice II and at left the Physalia physalis. The scientists, guests by the prince, studied and discovery the treatment for anaphilaxye, a serious allergic reaction that is rapid in onset and may cause death.

Between 1992 and 2004 Germany issued a series of nine "20 Century German Artists" issues (20 stamps), skipping several years. The last issue (Mi #2432, November 4, 2004) in the series features this painting, Das Geheimnis Eng.:The Secret (1939) by Felix Nussbaum.

From wikipedia, "Felix Nussbaum (1904-1944) was a German-Jewish surrealist painter. Nussbaum's work gives a rare glimpse into the essence of one person among the victims of the holocaust...In 1933, Nussbaum was studying under a scholarship in Rome at the Berlin Academy of the Arts when the Nazis gained control of Germany. Adolf Hitler sent his Minister of Propaganda to Rome in April to explain to the artist elites how a Nazi artist was to develop, which entailed promoting heroism and the Aryan race. Nussbaum realized at this point that, as a Jew, he could not remain at the academy...On August 2, 1944 they (Nussbaum and wife) arrived at Auschwitz, and a week later Felix was murdered at the age of 39."
