Poland,2019 80th anniversary of the Defence of the Polish Post Office in Danzig From Wikipedia : "The Defence of the Polish Post Office in Danzig (Gdansk) was one of the first acts of World War II in Europe. On September 1, 1939, the Invasion of Poland was initiated by Germany. Danzig paramilitaries and police, supported by Germany, immediately joined the offensive to take full control of the city, by capturing the Polish post office. Polish personnel defended the building for some 15 hours. All but four of the defenders, who were able to escape from the building during the surrender, were sentenced to death by a German court martial as illegal combatants on October 5, 1939, and executed." Polish Post has just issued (September 1st) another stamp to commemorate the event. Jan Michon was the Director of the Post Office,Flisykowski and Guderski were two of the defenders |

This 30p value (Hib #C985) from Ireland's Millennium Issue III set of six stamps depicts a painting or illustration of Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) being visited by two church officials. I'm sorry... I am not familiar with this piece of artwork. |

Thanks vayolene! The cropping certainly changes the atmosphere.
Here is some information from the artuk.org website, speaking about Solomon Alexander Hart's Milton Visiting Galileo when a Prisoner of the Inquisition...same subject, and not specific to one painting.
"The mathematician and experimental philosopher Galileo Galilei was held under house-arrest for the last 10 years of his life, owing to his independent and uncooperative attitude to Church orthodoxy on the question of heliocentrism, i.e., whether the sun was the centre around which the earth revolved or vice versa. The English poet John Milton visited him at this time, in Galileo's house in Arcetri near Florence: in Milton's words, 'There it was that I found and visited the famous Galileo grown old a prisoner of the Inquisition, for thinking in Astronomy otherwise than the Franciscan and Dominican licensers thought." |

Here is the USA's July 31, 2016 '3 ounce rate' (89c at time of issuance) Literary Arts series stamp (Sc #5105) commemorating the death centenary of American writer Henry James. From store.usps.com, "The 31st stamp in the Literary Arts series honors Henry James (1843-1916), a towering figure in American literature. In novels and stories that often explored the complex interplay between Americans and Europeans, James sought to portray the intricacies of society and the inner lives of his characters with exquisite realism, an intellectual and artistic achievement that earned him a reputation as one of the greatest writers America has ever produced. And speaking of the image, "On the right side, behind James , is a vignette showing a man and a woman in a small boat, an artistic interpretation of the climactic scene from James's 1903 novel The Ambassadors." |
