Here is the USA's July 27, 2021 'three ounce' (95c at issuance) domestic rate stamp (Sc #5619) recognizing American writer Ursula K. Le Guin. This is the 33rd stamp in the USPS's Literary Arts series. From The American Philatelist, October 2021, page 969, "The stamp features a portrait of Le Guin (1929-2018) based on a 2006 photograph with a background that references the wintry world and characters she created in The Left Hand of Darkness...As an author, Le Guin was interested in more than just science fiction. Her prescient writings - sometimes called forward-thinking and genre crossing - are now viewed as more than just fantasy." |

This February 11, 1975 five pfennig value (Mi #2013) of the DDR is from the miniature sheet of six different, vertically-oriented values commemorating the 450th anniversary of the German Peasants' War. Stamp shows a detail of an early 16th century woodcut depicting Ceres watching over two laboring farmers/peasants. From wikipedia, The German Peasants' War, Great Peasants' War, or Great Peasants' Revolt was a widespread popular revolt in some German-speaking areas in Central Europe from 1524 to 1525. It failed because of intense opposition from the aristocracy, who slaughtered up to 100,000 of the 300,000 poorly armed peasants and farmers...The German Peasants' Revolt was Europe's largest and most popular uprising prior to the French Revolution of 1789." The frame of the stamp should be a darker gray (with greater contrast), but my scanner doesn't agree that this is the case. |
