About a year ago, I found a bunch of videos on YouTube showing people opening their cartons from
Amazon, filled with returns. VERY similar to this - buyer has no idea what's inside (maybe buying in a particular category - clothes, housewares, electronics, etc)
Amazon would state what the retail value was before the items were returned and, as I recall, the 'gambler' would pay between 15c and 33c on the dollar.
The buyers would turn the stuff around and sell the items at whatever venue they thought appropriate. They seemed to be 'professionals' looking for 'stock'. There are plenty of people out there willing to make such a gamble, but they tend to be resellers rather than people looking to get lucky and find that 'thing' that they've been hoping to get at a discount.
Because they are
Amazon returns, much of the stuff was 'crap' - people returning empty boxes for a refund, returning a similar used item in the new item's box, etc. That, and no idea what you are getting, means this isn't anywhere 'worth it' to me.
