I came across this stamp while sorting through some stamps from the Central African Republic. My image searches have not been able to identify this stamp so I am hoping someone here can help identify this stamp...

I think this may be Yvert Air 183A of 1978, but it isn't illustrated. The two postage issues are 323A (20f) and B (40f). None is priced. |

I was wondering why nobody quoted a Scott number for this set, so I checked. It's not listed. However I did see that the 20F Balambo chair issue was overprinted in 1979; they had changed the name of the country that year from "Empire Centrafricain" to "République Centrafricain" and overprinted the 20F issue with the newer name. Perhaps the set was briefly sold with the old country name (and used, as shown by your postally used example) and then taken off the market when they changed from an Empire to a Republic.
I would be interested to know the values, if any, that these stamps are given in Michel.
Independent African stamps from the mid-70s to present are an interesting challenge... you see what appears to be an unremarkable stamp, but it could be a lot rarer than you think!

Nice Vayolene. Paoua and its surrounding territories have become something of a ghost town after rebel and government soldier attacks in 2006 and 2007, with much of the population fleeing into the bush or into refugee camps |

Bcantin - the reason that Yvert and other catalogues don't give values is that they didn't function as legitimate postage stamps, being readily available in the country of origin etc. |

From Wiki: The Central African Empire (French: Empire centrafricain) was a short-lived and self-proclaimed imperial one-party state ruled by an absolute monarch that replaced the Central African Republic and was, in turn, replaced by the restoration of the Republic. The empire was formed by and under the command of Marshal Jean-Bédel Bokassa, military dictator and president of the Central African Republic, on 4 December 1976. Bokassa spent the equivalent of over US$20 million, a third of the country's government annual income, on his coronation ceremony. The monarchy was abolished (the most recent one ruled by an emperor) and the republic was restored on 21 September 1979, when Bokassa was ousted and replaced with David Dacko, with French support.
