Hello all:

I have something that may be of interest to the group. I cannot pinpoint the date of this but it's absolutely from the 1800's timeframe due to the ships mentioned. If I had to guess the ships mentioned put this in the 1870's.

If you look at the first page you will see at the top "INMAN LINE" and just under that "United State and Royal Mail Steamers". Under that there appears to be a schedule with dates for the entire year. It could be for 1879 since the ship called the City of Berlin was built in 1875 and March 13th in the schedule does not occur again until 1879.

There is another thing that I found really fascinating about the these ships, they were in competition with a company White Star Line who as most of or all of you know built the Titanic.

If you look at the image below I am showing you the front of the pamphlet first, then the back. the last image is really cool about it the middle. It shows each ship and the cabin plans. The ship called the "City of Berlin" even had a mail room. I hope this information helps folks if they are ever looking for some information about this steamer line and the mail schedule.

It also say on the back..."These Steamers do not carry Horses, Cattle, Sheep or Pigs"". That's comforting to know if you had a pet giraffe or an elephant....

The date at the bottom of the first page says March 1879 and that year fits with the dates on that page.

Hi wkusau,

LOL... I am going blind. I actually went back to the calendar to figure it out. It's sad that I cannot read or see anymore. I hope they still allow pet giraffes on this ships.

Thank you!

it could be of interest.

The Inman Line Steamship Company was established in 1850 and operated until 1885 when the assets were purchased by the American Line and Red Star Line.

At the time it was liquidated, The Inman Line was reported to have made little or no money for a long time. This was primarily due to having too many steamships in the transatlantic passenger service.

They also lost several ships - the City of Boston in 1870 and the City of Brussels in January 1883. The Inman Line Pier burned a few months later. In 1885, the Inman Line fleet consisted of the City of Chicago, City of Richmond, City of Chester, and City of Berlin.
