Please Identify This Stamp

Hello, I just inherited a stamp collection and came across an interesting envelope from 1903. Can anyone provide any information on this envelope and stamp? I believe its an embossed stamp. I am totally new so any and all inforamtion is appreciated.

Not really a stamp but a stamped envelope. This was a US envelope, overprinted with "Philippines" between 1900 and 1903

This was for use in the Philippines where the USA supplied the stamps.

You would find those items in the back of a Specialized US catalog; not normally as part of a catalog of independent Philippines.

Read about the Spanish-American War of 1898.

Having little experience with US/Philippines postal history I have a question about this cover. So it was to be used for mail from the Philippines to the United States. Since it is cancelled with New York, N.Y., I take it that it was not used for its intended purpose between the two countries? And is it considered a misuse/improper use of Postal stationary?

Thank you for the information. Do envelopes like this have any value? I am only beginning to go through the collection and am trying to get a sense of exactly what is valuable and should be kept in a more secure location and what is not as valuable. I will definitely be posting more pics and questions!!!

I'm not sure why you say you cannot see a cancellation on the envelope. Your first photo shows it very clearly as New York, N.Y. Mar. 4, 1903 5:30PM

The postmark running across the stamp "cancels" the stamp's validity for future use.

I say this without malice (hard to believe maybe), but you don't need to know anything about stamp collecting or philately to know that's a cancellation; you only need to know how to mail a letter.

Also, more generally, words like "valuable" are so relative that they don't really mean anything without context. There are collectors that may spend $50,000 for a single stamp or cover and not think twice, while others can't afford to spend more than $5. If you were close to the original collector and have a sentimental streak (Lord knows I do), that alone makes the collection valuable.
