Hi all,
I'm having a bit of difficulty on this one. After 40 years it's only my second penny black so I'm delighted to have it whatever plate it is but it also means I don't have much experience playing them past my first one from 30 odd years ago. This seems to have some contradictory signs that are pointing me different directions. Any advice would be very welcome.
Thanks
Paul

I am tempted to say plate 2:

Top left star is complete (positions FF-JL, includes II). Frame over right star shows a break and to its right is very weak. The star itself misses the 11 o'clock ray. Strong left I frame, weak right I frame.

Hi NSK. Thanks for the detailed response. I had been trying to reconcile the few bits of information I had along with the Nissen images and was torn between a few and tending towards a plate 6 but you could well be right, it's difficult to see the rays in some of the Nissens but I'll focus on the elements of the 2 for a bit. Thank you.

.... Also, just for the purposes of background, I wouldn't be in the position to be buying this type of stamp (my collection is cheap and cheerful as they say) but I came across it by chance stuck to the gum on the back of a KGV Mint 11/2d in an unsorted bag of bits and bobs I picked up. Just shows you can be lucky sometimes #128578;

It looks like a plate 6 to my eyes.

Thanks Bobby. Narrowing it down to acouple here was the aim so a 6 & a 2 helps me a lot. I know some people say they find it easy but not me. I suppose if it was easy there wouldn't be such expensive books on the subject!!

It is not easy. The plates wore down and were repeaired. Inking and whiping of the plate may cause small variations. Not all examples are perfect.
