I recently found this copy of Ceylon Scott #54 in a bundle of kiloware. Not a great example and there were layers of hinges on the reverse but it is definitely being added to the album. I was at first unsure of whether or not there was significant damage but, after cleaning it up, it now looks to me as if it is from a sheet margin with blind perfs extending from the top about a third of the way down.

Here is the question. Is it better to leave the remnants of the selvedge, with the perfs and the fraction of the design that extends there, or attempt to remove it? My inclination would be to leave it as is even though it does mean that the stamp has the appearance at first glance of a badly damaged specimen.

Leave it like that. If you try to remove some of the selvage you will run the chance of destroying some of the stamp

Just for appearance sake I'd trim the selvedge parallel to the stamp design...

Thanks for the opinions. I thought that maybe trimming to the perfs would possibly damage an otherwise sound stamp. Never thought of just tidying the edge of that ragged self edge though. Shall have to edit the scan to see just what it might look like.

Definitely leave it as it is. The interest is in the blind perforations, and the selvage shows how it was dealt with. To bring things down to the basic level, if you trim the perfs it will significantly reduce the value of the stamp.

I vote to leave it as it is. A stamp in its "natural state" is always more interesting to me than a stamp that has been "fixed."

Experienced stamps need a home too. I'd rather have an example that is imperfect than no example.
