I wonder if any of you can tell me more about these stamps. From internet I understand they are from the 1840's and extremely rare. That is why I wonder if this item is real or fake. If real I suppose it is very precious. Maybe you can tell me where I can find it in my Scott specialized catalogue? Help appreciated!!

These are fake. Stamps are fake, postmarks are fake, cover is probably fake too.

Paper fragment is burn-marked and water damaged, also stained with tea / coffee, yet the manuscript, adhesives and cancel look pristine. Fake - oh yes.

I was going to ask if the tea used to age the envelope was sweet or unsweetened tea, but you beat me to it...

Hope it was unsweetened as I assume sweet would attract silverfish, or something.

Used to make "old" hand-drawn treasure maps for the kids when they were little - stained using tea - and they thought they looked pretty authentic!

When I was a kid (<10) "someone" made a map invite to a neighbor's birthday party. The map was on onion paper strained with what I assume was tea and they had burned all the edges.

It really looked like a treasure map and had all sorts of clues. We scoured the neighborhood for hidden items that were clues to the actual puzzle.

Simple things like that I remember decades later.

Of course, we never locked the doors and both parents worked and we were left on our own all each day over summer vacation. Had to make our own sandwich for lunch or starve. Seemed to get along regardless of our sexes or colors.

The good old days...
