Can you guys tell me more about this stamp? Thanks to Peter in another thread I found it under "carrier stamps" in my Scott catalogue. Is this stamp genuine or false? Thank you for helping me out!

Scott # LO2, imperforate,from 1851. Issued with brown gum. Mint $50.

After, there were three official reprinting made. First and second of 10,000 each, by Continental Banknote Company all sold; third of 10,000, by American Banknote Company with only 9680 sold. [EDIT: These reprints were issued without gum.]

LO5 is imperforate and is $25 mint. LO6 is perf 12 valued at $125.

While both LO1 and LO2 had three reprints, both were only assigned two additional numbers, one for perforate and the other for the perf 12.

Beyond that the detailed footnotes in Scott are too lengthy for me to copy here but mostly as they are not my footnotes, I don't want to answer questions about them. Some on the SCF taught me that when Scott Footnotes are copied, some folks get their egos in a knot and become unpleasant.

Thanks so much parcelpostguy. You are right, egoos-in-a-knot are a worldwide problem, not so easely solved. But let us keep high hope !
By the way, there is no trace of gum on the backside of my stamp, and neither does it seem to have been stuck in an album! Does that mean the stamp is false?

Never having gum points to this being LO5, issued that way. It looks from the back to be the hard white paper used for that, too.

English is only my first language so I may still make mistakes, especially when posting late at night or before morning coffee.

I added an edit to my post above to spell out the gum only came on the first printing.

Yes, the footnotes mention the use of special papers and as such, the LO reprint examples mentioned in my first post are a way to get your hands on examples of those papers which might make some stamp issues of the period "special." [Battle stations, battle stations, all hands on deck, prepare for torpedoes, missiles, aircraft, spitballs, and general attacking language... ]
