I have a box of first day covers that includes a #U540 3 cent Washington with surcharge. The envelope is postmarked on June 30, 1959, in Naugatuck, Connecticut.

Could this be a first day of issue or usage cover for the surcharged version of the envelope stamp? The unsealed, empty envelope does not appear to have traveled through the mail.

I believe the First Day was 7-31-1958 with the EKU of certain U540 varieties being 8-1-1958.

The UPSS database of ERP/EDU/FDC shows a U540/3456-46 FDC of 8/1/1958. U540 comes in 4 sizes, 4 watermarks, for a total of 12 varieties. We (the UPSS) are interested in adding additional pictures and info on FDCs to the database. Can you provide size and watermark info for your cover?

The size is No. 6 3/4, UPSS size 12.
The watermark is #46, dated 1957.

Thanks, John. You have 3456-46, the only size 12 watermark for U540 which is pictured in the database but also proving that you have a fdC of this item. You, or anyone, can view the ERP/EDU/FDC database at http://upss.org/erp.

The webmaster is the only one with access to the programming so if you find any problems, report them. I am still finding and reporting errors since the website was reworked. Fortunately the data is still correct.

Bill

The UPSS lists the UPSS#3456-46, ex-Steve Levine, as having an ERP of 8-1-1958, the example in the OP is described as;
Quote:
The envelope is postmarked on June 30, 1959, in Naugatuck, Connecticut.

Thus the OP does NOT have a FDC if it is in fact identified correctly as UPSS#3456-46.
