Canada 2020 From Far and Wide Magdalen Islands are located in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. The archipelago comprises Carboniferous volcanic hills flanked by sandstone platform, and was pushed to the surface by salt-diapirs. Its shoreline features wave sculped red sandstone cliffs, natural arches, and sea stacks. Floe Peak is located on the western border of Kootenay National Park in the Canadian Rockies. The Precambrian-Jurassic limestone strata were uplifted during Laramide orogeny when the Farallon Plate were sliding under the North American Plate. |

Azores 2006 Hydrothermal Vents The Azores Plateau is located above an active triple junction between the North American Plate, the Eurasian Plate and the African Plate. It was formed by the Azores hotspot 20 million years ago and is still associated with active volcanism. Geothermally heated fluid discharges from fissures on the seafloor, and minerals precipitate to form cylindrical vents. |

Azores 2017 Geoparks The Capelinhos on Faial Island is the westernmost rock outcrop on the Eurasian Plate. The 1957-1958 eruption created accumulation of volcanic ashes, pumice, and basaltic tephra and lava flows. Erosion by ocean waves has subsequently removed over two-thirds of this 64-years-old volcano. |
