Mexico 2009 Wild Earth
Sierra del Carmen is an isolated range (a sky island) that rises above the Chihuahua Desert in northern Mexico, adjoining the Big Bend National Park in Texas, USA. Massive Lower Cretaceous limestone formations and underlying metamorphic basement are exposed along its fault escarpment.

Monument Valley is a red-sand desert region near the center of Colorado Plateau. It features erosional landscapes, with towering buttes and mesas (Permian to Triassic sandstone and shale) on top of lower slopes (Permian shale). The floor of the valley is composed of Lower Permian siltstone.

Lone Ranch Beach is located near Brookings, Oregon, on the Pacific coast. The crescent-shaped beach is dotted with outcrops of the Franciscan Complex, a Late Mesozoic metamorphosed and deformed rock assemblage accreted to the western margin of North America.

Acadia National Park is located on Mount Desert Island, Maine. This rocky headland on the Atlantic coast is composed mostly of Devonian granite intrusions. Its landscape is shaped by erosion, ocean wave action, and glaciation since Late Permian.

Canada 2020 From Far and Wide
Magdalen Islands are located in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. The archipelago comprises Carboniferous volcanic hills flanked by sandstone platform, and was pushed to the surface by salt-diapirs. Its shoreline features wave sculped red sandstone cliffs, natural arches, and sea stacks.
Floe Peak is located on the western border of Kootenay National Park in the Canadian Rockies. The Precambrian-Jurassic limestone strata were uplifted during Laramide orogeny when the Farallon Plate were sliding under the North American Plate.

Canada 2019 From Far and Wide
Quttinirpaaq National Park is located on the northeastern corner of Ellesmere Island. Part of its rugged terrain is covered by glaciers and ice caps. The park lies in the Franklinian Orogenic Belt, where Cambrian to Devonian sedimentary rocks were uplifted during a tectonic episode in Late Paleozoic.

Canada 2018 From Far and Wide
Percé Rock is a massive Devonian limestone sea stack in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, just off the tip of the Gaspé Peninsula. This Early Paleozoic geosyncline fill along the Laurencia continental margin was uplifted as a result of the Appalachian orogeny.

Bermuda 2013 Beaches
Jobson's Cove is located on the south shore, adjacent to Warwick Long Bay. This secluded sandy beach is surrounded by cliffs of Pleistocene aeolianite, calcareous dune sand that has been lithified by percolating rainwater.

Azores 2006 Hydrothermal Vents
The Azores Plateau is located above an active triple junction between the North American Plate, the Eurasian Plate and the African Plate. It was formed by the Azores hotspot 20 million years ago and is still associated with active volcanism. Geothermally heated fluid discharges from fissures on the seafloor, and minerals precipitate to form cylindrical vents.

Azores 2017 Geoparks
The Capelinhos on Faial Island is the westernmost rock outcrop on the Eurasian Plate. The 1957-1958 eruption created accumulation of volcanic ashes, pumice, and basaltic tephra and lava flows. Erosion by ocean waves has subsequently removed over two-thirds of this 64-years-old volcano.

Spain 2020 World Heritage of Humanity
Gran Canaria is a volcanic island in the Canaries archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Morocco. Eruption of alkali basalt started during Late Miocene. Most of the inland peaks, highlighted by Risco Caido and the Sacred Mountains, were formed by erosion from the basaltic lava and pyroclastic material erupted during Pliocene.

Andorra 2022 Mountains
The Pyrenees was created by collision between the Iberian Plate and the Eurasian Plate during Paleogene. Its axial zone comprises intensely folded and thrusted Paleozoic rock formations. Pic de Carroi (elevation 2335 m), for example, is a Carboniferous metamorphic rock outcrop with an alkaline granite intrusive on its southern flank.

Andorra 2005 Landscapes
The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley was carved out from its granodiorite bedrock during the Quaternary ice age. The upper part of the valley features a landscape of craggy cliffs and slopes with small glacial lakes.

France 1985 Tourism
Rock of Solutré is located 8 km west of Mâcon, on the western flank of the Saône River plain. This inselberg is the erosional remnant of a Late Jurassic coralline limestone plateau which was uplifted and tilted during the Alpine orogeny.
