Costa Rica 2009 Natural Wonders Cerro Chirripó (elevation 3820 m) is the highest peak in Cordillera de Talamanca, a mountain range uplifted due to emplacement of the Cocos Ridge underneath the Caribbean Plate. This gabbro outcrop of Late Miocene age is flanked by diorite intrusion. Poás Volcano (elevation 2697 m) is an active stratovolcano in the Central American Volcanic Arc, a chain of volcanoes formed by subduction of the Cocos Plate underneath the Caribbean Plate. The basaltic-andesitic volcano has erupted 40 times since 1828 and has two crater lakes near the summit. |

Trinidad and Tobago 2021 Landscapes Gasparee Caves is a natural system of caverns, pools, and sinkholes on the island of Gaspar Grande, off the northwestern coast of Trinidad. This and many other cave systems on the island are formed by karstification of Tertiary limestone formations. The Pitch Lake in La Brea in southwest Trinidad is the largest natural deposit of asphalt in the world, estimated to contain 10 million tons. It contains biodegraded crude oil migrated from its Upper Cretaceous marine source rocks deeply buried in the basin. |
