Kyrgyzstan 2025 Pearls of Kyrgyz Nature - Kulun Lake
Kulun Lake (elevation 2856 m) is a rock-darned Alpine lake within the Fergana mountain range. It is close to the seismically active Talas-Fergana fault, a 700 km long strike-slip fault that bisects the Tian Shan Range. The lake sits on Paleozoic sedimentary rock formations which were uplifted and deformed during the Alpine orogeny and carved by glaciation.

Tajikistan 2025 Glaciers
Grumm-Grzhemaylo and Garmo are large valley glaciers located in the Pamir Mountains. They carve Mesozoic and Paleozoic rock formations which were uplifted due to Cenozoic tectonic activity. Glaciation forms pyramidal peaks and steep cliffs near source, while wide u-shaped valleys and moraine deposits form as glaciers move downslope.

Pakistan 2025 International Year of Glaciers Preservation
Siachen (76 km long), Biafo (67 km long) and Baltoro (63 km long) are the top three largest glaciers in the Karakoram range in the Kashmir region. They cut through granite and gneiss bedrocks uplifted along the convergent boundary between the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. Their meltwater ultimately feeds into the Indus River system.

Valley of the Ten Peaks and Moraine Lake exhibit classic glaciation landforms: U-shaped valley and moraine-darned lake. The peaks were carved from Precambrian to Jurassic rock formations uplifted and thrusted during Laramide Orogeny, a major mountain-building event in western North America from 80 to 40 million years ago.
