Hi there. I do not have a listing for plate errors and faults in Newfoundland stamps. I have a stamp in the coronation set that has an error. I do not know is this is a fault as in a detraction or if this is a plate error and more collectible/valuable. Can I invite some comments and observations? You will see the green in above the edge of the stamp above the 9 and in the "9" itself. thanks Will

Hi WillUK
Your stamp is not going to be a variety.
At first I thought maybe a finger print, showing possible roundness in the circle below, but the arrow points to cross hatching that does not have a finger print or a smear.

Dirty ink stained hands done maybe lifting printed sheets.
just my opinion...

Robert

I have the Darnell 3rd Edition of Canadian Philatelic EFOs from 2005. 'Overinking' isn't even an offical subject on the Table of Contents. The closest match is SB for 'Smudge'.

It may not be a Constant variety, but it is a variety nevertheless!

Peter..Good point...I have told many people that thought their stamp/cover was not unique..I told ever one of them it is..I said try to find some one out there that has the exact same cover...etc.

Robert

WillUK..What Peter is saying is like my Scott 140 { for example } that has a water stain...NOT a variety, but unique.

I think Newfoundland has many of these type of ink blotches. I noted quite a few in this previous thread on Newfoundland Scott 254

Collectible, but probably not worth too much.

There must be endless less than perfect examples out there in general given that stamps were not hard currency in the true sense but rather low cost utilitarian one-and-done disposable pieces of paper.

Interesting. I can see the distinction. I bought some German stamps from an older established collector who was selling off his massive collection. There were some very interesting plate errors and varieties most of which were listed in Michel Special - a set of catalogues he sold me a used copy of also. These tended to be an extra dot or missing something or a line that does not do what it is supposed to do. I suppose as one of you said these cheap disposable pieces of paper will have an endless variety. I guess for me the distinction will be stronger for definite varieties rather than errors or smudges. I think a smudge or misplaced drop of ink would detract, and although unique, I would probably upgrade whereas a variety or plate error would be collectible. Just my 0.02 cents..... Thanks
