Stamp on left is, I believe, SC 12, 1857, smooth white paper, unwatermarked. On the right is what appears to be SC 9, 1856, rough yellowish paper, watermark 105(crossed diagonal lines).

The two are of the same design type but, by comparison, the one on the right looks suspicious. Yet it is on the rough yellowish paper and has the watermark of crossed lines.

So, is it genuine after all?

These areas don't look right
Just my opinion….I could be wrong

Thanks, Rogdcam.

I forgot to mention that I had consulted Album Weeds, which suggested that it was genuine. And it has a watermark. Nonetheless, it just didn't look good enough to be genuine.

looks genuine to me. The wmk should be perfect squares 7mm on the side.
These come in many many printing varieties.Notice the very slight right inclination of the second O in correos.
Because lack of quality control in Madrid;some of the forgeries were just as good,if not better than the genuine stamps...

Thanks, perf12 and rogdcam, for the confirmation. Do forgeries ever appear on watermarked paper?

The forgeries appeared in 1857 of the un watermarked issue because of the de-centralized sale of the stamps also from private vendors. These forgeries proliferated up to 1864..

Thanks again. I'm downloading the article for my files.

Perf12: A couple of more general questions. Are forgeries typically of unwatermarked stamps? Have they been done of watermarked stamps?

I am not aware of forgeries of the first watermarked issues. They may well exist though.
Sc 5-8 genuine stamps with forged surcharges abound ...

I had indeed thought it unlikely that a forger would get his hands on watermarked paper. But if he could . . .? And here the design looked dodgy, despite meeting all of Album Weeds criteria. In any case, thanks again to all who responded. Knowledge does beat guesswork.
