Here's a free-franked soldier's postcard mailed from India to Wilmington, Delaware, in July 1945. What surprised me was that the message reveals precisely where the soldier is stationed: Jorhot, India. I thought this was a big no-no and was exactly was the censors were supposed to redact. The war was still being waged against Japan at that time. Was it just such a remote post that no one cared?

I presume that, the Japanese having been defeated in Burma by that point, there was much less sensitivity about the whereabouts of allied forces in India.

No, it gets forwarded TO APO 466 FROM NY. APO (and FPO for Navy) post office designations were used in WWII so as to not disclose troop locations. NY and SF were the central processing points for European and Pacific theaters. Mail sent to any APO XXX, NY, NY would be forwarded to wherever the indicated APO was at the time. Some of them moved around, and troops moved around during the war. But APO 466 was always in JORHAT, from 6/17/43 to 10/27/45.

Lesser numbers of U.S. APO's operated out of Miami, New Orleans, Seattle.

In addition to the secrecy of location as noted above, the APO number made it easier to deal with the mobility of units. Very similar to the "follow the regiment" instructions seen on civil war letters, which happened anyway without any instructions. The military knew where the units were.

It seems like both the sender and the Army Examiner could have been reprimanded for this breach, especially on an open message that anyone could read. Were the censors really doing anything at this point in the war?
