I know sometimes designers sign their blocks, but the designer for this stamp was Leon Helguera, modeled by V. S. McCloskey Jr., and I don't think that's the signature... does anyone recognize it?

I see where he signed it with "stamp engr(aver)". If you can find out who engraved this you have your man

I agree, the full signature is George A. Gundersen / stamp engr" spanning across two stamps.

However, do keep an open and broad mindset. Signers are not always designers or engravers. They are often dignitaries at the first day ceremony.
