I found this unusal item at a stamp show today.
Great Britian #1 image on a paper bag from Japan

The bag is approximately 6-1/2 x 9 inches and rather tattered.

Nice!

Glico is one of the big candy companies in Japan.

Roughly, the large text says something like "The world's number one, Glico Almond Chocolate, can get you the world's first stamp". There's a contest to win a Penny Black.

Under the stamp is "The world's oldest stamp / Black Penny".

Cool find! I love philatelic ephemera like this..any idea what year? My guess is 1960's?

What was the nature of the 'contest'? Penny Blacks randomly inserted into candy bars? Or maybe you had to send in some proof of purchases for a chance of winning? In any case, it is a unique relic of a bygone era where collectors postage stamps could be used as basis for mass consumer promotion.

Giving Penny Blacks away is a common promotion for stamps clubs etc.

HIPSTAMP has been giving away a penny black, for quite some time.

One of my local stamp clubs, gives away a penny black as a door prize, when they have auctions.
