2022 Scott Catalogue Changes To Classic India Numbers

I checked out the new 2022 Scott Volumes 3A and 3B to look up some Queen Victoria India stamps. Excellent pictures, but the numbers have really changed over the years. There is no Scott 5, or 7 anymore. I guess 7 is now 4C, but what happened to #5? (2 anna green imperf) There is a note about #5, but it is not listed anywhere that I can see.

Here are the new 2022 Scott major numbers for India:

No 5 or 7 or 8. Then there are many sub-numbers below these major numbers. Maybe they left #5 out by mistake? Kind of strange and a little confusing, since they had a note talking about #5.

Before someone asks me, here is the Scott 2022 note below #6F:

No.1 was not placed in use.

Nos. 2, 4, 5 and 6 are known with unofficial perforation.

No. 5 is known with the watermark having the words "One Ana" in place of the lions and shield, with Urdu and Bengali characters. Values: $1200 unused; $650 used.

Values are for cut-square stamps with four clear margins.

Beware of forgeries. Reprints also exist.


As I said in my OP, there is no listing for #5 at all.

I think the missing 2 anna green is a simple misteak. Most of the footnote has been around for some time. There have been a very few disconnected footnotes in the past in Scott.

I got curious about the missing #8, which has been gone for a long time. I went back to an 1895 Scott and found the arrangement of the earliest issues very different, so it was a casualty of some later reshuffling. In the 1895 catalog, #8 was the 8a rose on blue paper.

If you send a mail to Scott and if I send one, maybe they'll contemplate thinking about considering fixing it for the 2023 catalogs.

Scott's reshuffling of numbers causes confusion with preprinted albums and PDF files of albums to be printed, as well as the marketplace.

As an example, there are many India Scott #7's for sale on ebay and elsewhere right now, and I guarantee you people in the future will try to look up the latest SCV for one before they purchase, only to find out there is no #7 listed. #7 is now #4C, according to Scott.

The purpose of this post was just to inform everyone of the major reshuffle.

Can you email Scott? Do they only accept "snail" mail?
