Different Sized 1875-1878 Internal Revenue Stamps?

I recently came across an 1875-1878 2 cent blue internal revenue stamp (Scott# R152a or R152b) which was of a much larger size than the other stamps of this type in my collection. It still has a 12x12 perforation and the same size of design, but the stamp itself is considerably taller. Does anyone know why this is?

The perforating machines did not always work perfectly; it's not unusual to find stamps such as this.

The tall stamp is from the top margin. Perforating machines were routinely set wide at the margins. It is why we see so many large stamps from the margins.
