Hello. I'm new to stamps, having recently come into possession of some. I want to know the plate number for my penny black. If anyone can help me, I would appreciate it very much.

Nice stamp. When it comes to Penny Blacks, there are stamps that have four margins, and those that don't. Yours does which is good. Ones that are cut too close on one or more sides are not nearly as desirable to collectors.

Interesting ditties on the Penny Black

Plate 6, Issued 17th June 1840, 9,095,040 stamps
Your stamp sat on the very bottom row (20th) and 5 in from the right hand side.

Henry Wyon had began to draw Princess Victoria from 13 years old.
The Postage stamp is based on the Wyon sketch, from a sitting when she was just 15 years old.

A rhyme at the time...

You must kiss our fair Queen, or her pictures, that's clear
Or the gummy medallion will never adhere;
You will not kiss her hand, you will readily find
But actually kiss little Vickey's behind.

I wonder if there are any young lasses out there, with the name Penny Black ?

Quite possibly. There was a lady at work whose marriage had brought her the name "Mary Christmas".

I've told Mrs DLR that if I had not married her, I would've waited to meet a girl with that name.
