Hello!

First of all I would like to wish all members of this great board a merry x mas!

I'm in a buying spree right now and bought this from a friend of a total of £87. I might have overpaid, what do you think, was it a good buy?

I don't know what plate the penny black is though, but has a red maltese cross cancellation to make up for the 2½ margins.

Hi there. This is an area that I collect, but I am not skilled at plating. I would say that you did overpay. For that kind of money you could have got a 'no line' blue.

I got all of these seven stamps for £87. So I did overpay, just what I suspected. Oh well, At least my stockbook lost it's virginity with the penny black.

These are still great stamps and someone is bound to say the KGV Seahorse makes up for it. It has very nice centering and it's worth finding which printing it is.

Thanks. That's funny that you say that, because that's what I actually told him that I would only accept 87 Euro's if he could throw in a good blue seahorse there too, which I have been missing from my collection. A green would be fine too. ;-D

In the world of stamps, you aren't going to find more history than this. Bad margins are what drag the value down. Postmarks or other unseen features could bring that back up. Always check classic GB stamps for watermarks.

Thank you! You're right.
Yes, especially the inverted ones.

Suggest your 3-2-2-3 "761" Postmark is forged
(Sunderland)
Nice blued paper.

I agree with Casey Magoo.

I am not sure why Rod thinks the "761" numeral has been forged. But otherwise, that Penny Red has impressive margins and does not look too bad. Whether there is value would depend on the plate. Most of your tuppence blues have bad margins. The one that has nice margins is rather smudged, as is your seahorse. The Penny Black has very bad margins and is cut into the design. That makes its value rather low.

Must look in the Penny Black. That B looks inverted.

It is not crap. Most are of this quality and the Penny Red looks quite good. I think most collectors would be content with most of your examples.

As for your Penny Black: my money would be on plate 1, after hardening: i.e., plate 1B make that 4.

What do you mean with "inverted B"? I'm no expert in these and don't know what It means or how to check it.

You like this seahorse better?

Agreed.
My opinion of the 761, lies in the height of the "1" following the "6"
and being substantially higher.
That together with the overall "overinking " look.

I may add, It takes some naivety, or bravery, to broadcast what
we pay for a set of stamps.
Most collectors will not do that.

As long as you are happy with what you pay, then that's just fine.

I'm brave, and I sometimes overpay, and sometimes pay less even much less, so I get a decent average.

We all make mistakes, hopefully we learn from them and educate ourselves more and develop.

Yes I do !
I think you have a new discovery, for the Postmark Database.
I need to do more research.
May we have a better scan please?
It seems to be HODSON'S PLACE ??? TOR Rd SW1
I cannot find it in London, and TOR Rd is intersected by only 2 major thoroughfares.

Oops ??TON Rd

Solved
Yes, a new discovery
HUDSON'S PLACE - WILTON Rd SW1

Yes Rod, I asked about this postmark in another thread a month ago and you were among those who replied. :-)

A "new discovery"? Sounds more positive than negative.
