What Is Your Opinion On This Green Cancel On A Blackjack

It appears to be a light green cancel, but why does the back of the stamp look like that? Is it legit? (I see the tears and creases)

There's writing on the back. I don't know if anyone can extract any meaning from that 1939 inscription.

This came as in a large dealer lot and was described as "rare green cancel" and asking high $$$.

Not a green cancel but rather a black cancel that has changed over time. I see this quite often.

As black cancels fade (or are lightened), they can seem to take on other colors as they get lighter. Green is one of those 'fade-to' colors. Black is made up of all kinds of pigments - the summation of all of them makes black. When you start 'fading the black', it is quite possible to have an 'imbalance' in color as you get lighter. That is the scenario that I have built up in my mind anyway - I don't know if it is ACTUALLY true, but this working theory has worked for me up to now. I've seen 'greenish' hued (light) cancels many times - they are simply black cancels that have lost 99% of their color and we are left with something a little 'off' (green).

I might add - this looks like a well cancelled stamp. The cancel is clear and crisp (in shape), and even 'bleeds through' to the reverse. The fact that it is so light from the front makes me wonder if it was artificially lightened. The stamp design seems unharmed, and that works AGAINST the idea that the cancel was lightened. Perhaps the cancel ink was 'oily' and little pigment - that might help explain how it seeped through to the back. Frankly, it's a bit of a mystery, but as to whether it is a green (or green-ish) cancel is no mystery to me - it is not green. It is faded/lightened black.
