I am looking for information on postal rates from the USSR to the US, both airmail and surface rate, for the 1970s and 80s. I have a couple of dozen covers sent from Radio Moscow to the US which are franked with a large variation in postage, some with stamps and some with meter franking. Most covers are marked as airmail but some are not, so I assume these were sent at surface rate. The covers are all of similar size and weight (I have the original contents for most of them), but the postage amounts on cover range from 3 K to 127 K. The 127 K covers are larger (about 6x9 inches) but are actual lighter than some of the smaller covers (approx 4x6) which are franked at rates from 8 to 32K, and higher for heavier covers. The time period for the covers spans 1975 to 1985.

Not much has been researched and compiled for historic postal rates form the 1970's onward likely due to a lack of collector interest in that period of postal history.

This document goes only through the mid-sixties but is extremely thorough and a great reference tool. I offer it for everyone to use. Sorry it does not answer your question.

I have that particular article by Oliver that discusses the rates through 1967. If anyone needs it, send me a message/email with your email address.

Rod - Surprisingly I could not find anything for more modern rates in Rossica's archives. Perhaps you will have more luck.

Then I bow to your greater knowledge in this field.
As a comparison, the Australian Postage rates during this period
is vastly complex, with so many services, discounts, products etc.
I have a thick monograph dealing with same.

I will assume Russia shall be similar.
Perhaps time to seek info from Russian Philatelic circles.

Rogdcam - I would be interested in the Oliver article. If you could email me the PDF that would be great. The forum will not allow me access to your email...

Starphil - I just realized that you have less than 50 posts which I believe triggers email privileges?
