Scott 87….not sure how the overstamping was done back when, however the right hand pair seem pretty much normal, but the left hand pair are over to the left of the stamps.
Any idea how the overstamping was done ?

The surcharges were applied by letterpress/typography on a printing press. Whether this was as individual pieces of type with spacers or one solid sheet, I do not know.

First, the surcharges are also not centered left-right upon the stamps to start with as probably intended. The underlying stamps on the top row are shifted to the left to start. The surcharges are different heights on each row, too. The surcharges are not uniformly printed, either. For this issue, the surcharge is found in various spots in the bottom third of the stamp design, perhaps due to margin trimming on the sheets of stamps used.

So, with all the positioning variables, all that is needed for the surcharges are to be reasonably in place on each stamp in the sheet. Are you assuming perfection is required for what was likely a semi-emergency for needed 2c stamps?

Hi, thanks for response. I was just interested on how they where overstamped. I thought at first they would have been done in bulk..like a big press with several being stamped in one go. Obviously this is not the case and it looks like that each stamp was done individually.
Again cheers for response
Robert

There is an extensive write up on these overprints for these stamps in the Walsh BNA catalogue by Julian Goldberg - perhaps the author will comment here.

Also, Brixton Chrome has a good overview on his blog http://canadianphilately.blogspot.c...charges.html

@Rfw125,

They were 'overprinted' as implied by hy-brasil's reply. Overstamping would imply the use of a stamping device. Normally, philatelists call this overprinting, irrespective of the method used.
