Has anyone ever seen this Wells Fargo Pony express label or identify value or usage? Placerville is in California.

Any help would be appreciated.

It is a facsimile of the logo on the pre-paid Pony Express envelopes that were used on westbound mail after W&F took over operation of the route. There were facsimile envelopes made around the 100th anniversary and used either for first day covers or event covers. What you have is probably a clipped portion of one of those envelopes.

There is a book for just about everything! In this case, one published by the United Postal Stationery Society in 1989:

It has about 1/3 page on the Placerville imprint, noting it was on a special extra thin tough paper, printed along the left side of the envelope. Value listed only with a dash.
However, as SPQR notes there were all sorts of 1960 souvenir items such as this one I "borrowed" from ebay:

It would require a closer examination of the paper which might help determine whether yours is from the 1860s or 1960s. The print quality of yours looks quite good. Is it watermarked or have mesh lines in the paper?

thanks John - I was looking for an example of the souvenir covers, but couldn't find one. Below is an example of the real McCoy borrowed from Richard Frajola's webpage.

The label is not a souvenir, it is an early forgery probably done circa 1870 as a label only (it also exists on envelopes as below). This is an image of a Wuestoff advertising cover bearing one of the labels - he may have been the manufacturer of the forgery but may have just been a seller.

Additional items sold by Wuestoff can be found in the PDF file of my exhibit of "mock locals" here: https://www.rfrajola.com/Mocks/mocks.pdf
