It appears that most of the press surrounding this book has been in coin- and currency-collecting circles rather than stamp collecting, and I just happened upon it by accident, so I figured I'd mention it. Freshly arrived today.

Michigan Mining Scrip - Paper of the Northern Michigan Copper and Iron Mining Districts, 2021, by Judith Haskins Davis, David H. Gelwicks, and the late Chester L. Krause, is a 320-page hardbound photographic reference to the miscellaneous and sundry paper ephemera of the mining industry of that region.

It covers everything including currency/scrip, bearer notes, checks, drafts, promissory notes, receipts, stock certificates, and coupons. The focus is more on smaller-sized documents than stock or bond certificates.

There is no price guide, but there are rarity ratings for the documents (R1-R7).

For collectors of U.S. revenues, images of documents featuring adhesive and imprinted revenues abound throughout.

I ordered my copy from Eric Jackson for $55 + $4 S&H:

Copies are individually numbered out of 500 copies and autographed by the two living authors.

Very much recommended!!

Dan - Thanks for bringing attention to this. It looks like a fascinating read even if you don't collect the area. I might try and score a copy.

Quite intriguing! I consider Michigan my original home state but never got very far into the Upper Peninsula to explore the mining areas. I might have to pick up a copy as well.

A related series of books was recently published by Michael Mahler about Nevada mining companies and various documents and state revenue stamps. There are four volumes available on Amazon by searching for his name. As a stamp collector, I like Volume 2, which comprehensively explains the various shades and roulettes found on these 19th century tax stamps made for the silver rush.
