The old Philadelphia prison near Independence Hall was the site of the first manned balloon flight in the United States 1790s. Balloon went over the Delaware River to Glouster County New Jersey. I think Deptford was where it landed.
I very much liked visiting Eastern State Penitentiary a couple of years ago. It is partly in ruins now but has great atmosphere. Al Capone spent a few years there, you can visit his cell. If I remember correctly it's located no too far from the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Not philatelic, but if you are a foodie I recommend a visit to Reading Terminal Market and for an eclectic, pricey, but delicious meal, the White Dog Cafe on Sansom Street, just of the Penn campus.
