Does anyone else have an opinion as to whether the stamp shown in my top scan is on unsurfaced paper?

Agree with Rob, top is unsurfaced, bottom is chalk-surface. I looked through my small collection, all of which are used, which means they were soaked off the envelope. However, it appears that the Chalk-Surface has a much finer definition of the wattles at upper right:


The one that I believe is un-surfaced has a much murkier look in that area:

Thanks for your scans, Partime!

On the basis of what's been said so far, I'd say that stamps printed on chalk-surfaced paper are much clearer and more distinct.

I don't know whether it would be possible to do this with stamps printed from worn plates, though.
