Inherited Collection / New Member

I've read the suggestions and first steps for those who have inherited collections, so I hope I'm not making any novice mistakes here.

I'm in Northern CA and have inherited my grandfather's stamp collection, most from late 1800s, early 1900s. Some are catalogued (interesting old collecting books and other stuff like miniature WW2 war effort posters) and some are loose.

I've looked up some things on line and there appears to be value, but I'm a bit overwhelmed. Have contacted a few shops in my area with no reply.

I'm not a collector myself so my interest is finding out what I have on my hands and selling or passing these on to someone who will better appreciate and preserve if it is not a particularly valuable collection.

Hi pushertee, and welcome. The best advice I can give you at this point is to post some pictures of the oldest items in the collection. You can also try and contact a local stamp club. For info on a local stamp club go to www.stamps.org . You do not need a password for their home page, just click on "estate advice". Usually going through a club is better, a dealer is not going to give you as good a deal as possible

The fact they were your grandfathers probably gives them their maximum value to you and other members of your family today and in the future.

Collecting for the enjoyment of collecting, whatever that might be, is the name of the game. Don't hesitate to ask questions especially if you need basic information and especially more advanced sources of information for any possible topic. You should be able to find folks on this board a little further along on their collecting journey glad to share experiences. Russ
