So I've been sorting a pre-owned world collection, and more than once have come across numbering on the stamp sleeve case which is different from numbering written on the back of the stamp. For instance, on the sleeve for this one was 168 which is Sc168 but the back has 60. I was thinking 60 was a SG no., but not.... SG no. is 79 is 323. Hummm......

Australia produces a plethora of Stamp Catalogues,
That number, if a cat ref, could be one of so many.
Disregard.
Nice stamp!
Postmark : Melbourne Duplex.

Actually, this is SG 323; 79 is the image number.

Yup, ignore those pencil numbers. It could even be an old seller's price in whatever currency you could imagine. Note also that the SG numbers for the Australian States were competely redone a while ago so catalog numbers do change.

I had a not-expensive German variety signed by BPP expert with the Michel cat number in pencil added by that expert. The numbering style of varieties for that stamp had changed in the meantime so the old pencil number was meaningless.

.

Tks for the correction. Sometimes by eyes gravitate to the bold type print in the catalogs. Ugh.

Often the penciled numbers on the back are the prices a dealer offered...

It needs a bath to get rid of the hinge remnants.

Nice stamp, though.
