A good friend gifted me this cover at lunch today. I think it interesting in that it is postmarked Mooselookmeguntic Maine. Mooselookmeguntic is notable in that it has 17 letters and five syllables, making it the longest town or city name (without hyphens or spaces) in the US.

The post office appears to have originally been named Haines Landing and operated from June 21, 1888 until January 31, 1935. It was re-established on 28 July 28, 1936 as Mooselookmeguntic and operated until it was discontinued on September 30, 1947.

17 letters might be tops for a US city but one could likely misspell seventeen letters in the longest place name with little notice:

Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu

Thank the Kiwis for that one or should I say that eighty-five lettered one.
