Obviously one can ask why so much effort but I am familiar with using computer and I want more information on my album pages, not just stamps, period and value. Just using some albums (for example, Davo) does not offer me the insight of the Victorian era and stamps value.
Add watermark orientations, plate numbers, overprints, and 'shades' and we are talking the same focus, or lack of it.
I too make my own album pages and am working on an Excel list. But it has been a work in progress for ages.
The problem with such a scope is that it is highly specialised. Roy Hamilton-Bowen, who edits the Hibernian Handbook of Irish postage stamps, once told me his quite extensive listing that includes paper varieties was not complete. The reason is that if he had made it too specialised, no one would buy his Hibernian Handbook. DAVO and most album makers would limit their client base considerably if they had included all those varieties. There are a lot more people that do not buy a very specialised album that will have too many spaces than there are specialists who do not buy it because there are too few spaces.
There, of course, are exceptions such as specialised Machin stamp album pages. However, if you want to have a specialised collection, you may find making your own (extra) pages is the only realistic option.
