When I look at printed auction catalogs, mainly Siegel--although others also, the quality of the images of the stamps is highly impressive. In many ways the catalogs are more enjoyable than actual stamp albums filled with stamps, easier to handle, also usually contain images of better stamps than I will have ever have.

Has there ever been a book published which is mainly color reproductions of stamps? What I am picturing is something like a layout of a stamp album (like USA 1847-1934, Worldwide 1840-1900, 19th Century British Colonies, Imperial China, etc.)--each in one bound volume, instead of album paper, it would be printed on glossy stock (like Siegel) and instead of spaces for stamps would have high quality images of stamps. Would have title/headers like a stamp album, ordered by year and grouped by issue, maybe some descriptions of stamps like some stamp albums have, but mostly images of stamps.

Does such a thing exist?

I am aware of books like The World of Classic Stamps: 1840-1870 by MacKay, there are only a few pages of color stamps, but mostly B&W (it is more a reference book than a photo book)

Sounds as if you'll have to construct that one yourself from printed or web images!

You might try Pictorial Treasury of U.S. Stamps, Marzulla, ed. From 1974, this should be very easy to find in good condition and cheap (Amazon, ebay, even your local used bookstore), since so many were given as gifts to collectors and not found to be a useful reference. It is not complete for US stamps. There are various older specialized and bound auction catalogs with color sections.

Overall, color fidelity and print quality can be all over the place, something you may have already found.

Most catalogues only show parts of sets. Maury's catalogues show everything.

Thanks for all of the suggestions,

I actually did search Amazon for 'postage stamp coffee table books' and 'stamp collecting coffee table books' (spoiler alert: there aren't many), and that one did not come up. Although it is true that I am looking for more of a pretty book than any kind of serious reference, I do prefer that the pretty book have classic stamps.

It looks like Pictorial Treasury of U.S. Stamps, Marzulla is pretty much exactly what I was looking for--chronological order, nice images, and even some info about the issues. It looks to be maybe about 60% complete which is not the 100% I was wishing for but plenty comprehensive enough. Currently searching for a nice copy on ebay.

If anybody has more ideas, I'm all ears. Either USA, WW, or other country specific.

For France, I hope you are aware of Le Patrimoine du Timbre-Poste Français Flohic Editions, 1998. over 900 lavish pages, a number of which are similar enough to album arrangements of sets and such, giving Yvert & Tellier and Michel numbers and other issue information, as well as in many cases extensive notes on the stamp's topicality and context. All in French btw.

It's quite remarkable and can be had for a relative song; check www.addall.com/used and there are a number of copies under 10 USD although you'll want to attend to added shipping costs for such a heavy tome.

jleb: I think you previously drew our attention to this. On your recommendation, I picked one up from France on Abe. It really is a fabulous production, and one that is, I suspect, without equal. Thanks again.
