Question that occurred to me:
Has anyone looked at a Sweden booklet and does anyone know if those booklets are plate-able or of they have the colour shifts that the Canadian version does?
And, if so, what do they call them? How do they distinguish between them?
A new avenue (side street) of investigation.

I went to ebay Sweden the other day top see if the Swedish booklet was being offered. Not a one. Why would we assume the Swedish booklet pane would be different? I suspect only the cover is variable. As for the cancel I'd guess not the Phil Ctr but rather sold (and canceled) through a national post office at the country's capital main post office. Just guessing. |

I don't believe there is any way that a colour shift can be used to plate the position of any given stamp on the plate. A colour shift occurs at the time of printing, not at the time the press sheet is layed out.
The one exception would be a *unique* pane, such as the USA Jenny invert, where each stamp's position (one method anyway) can be identified due to the relative placement of the red and blue colours to each other.
In the case of Canada's Marine Life stamps, the July-August 2010 Corgi Times (as noted earlier) illustrates one possible method to plate these stamps.
The light blue background dots are oriented at an angle on the booklet pane stamps but are oriented at a right angle on the souvenir sheet.
For the booklet pane stamps, the Harbour Porpoise has light blue dots in the UL and UR corners ... check these to note differences. For the Sea Otter stamps, look at the light blue dots at the end of the "wave" above the back of the larger Sea Otter ... their placement and numbers vary slightly from one stamp to another.
The Corgi Times article suggests that there are five different panes to collect based on these dot patterns.
If you are a serious collector of modern Canadian stamps, I would recommend joining BNAPS (British North America Philatelic Society) and getting a one year free dues in the Elizabethan II Study Group (Corgi Times journal). |

Quote: The Corgi Times article suggests that there are five different panes to collect based on these dot patterns. I am a member and I saw the Corgi times article, and 5 different panes is possible, but ten is more likely as cylinder numbers appear every tenth booklet. Evidence of this is that I have two booklets with the dot pattern on the scroll identical, but other patterns at the lower areas are different. |

to Puzzler regarding your strange (to me) pictorial cancel: according to my Canadian collection, I found this postmark (cancel reveals OFFICIAL AGENT / Canada Post (and in French also). I have it put on several mint stamps in Lake Shore stamp show (few years ago). Where Canada-Post have a mobile post-office used in several stamp show. (hope my english is understandable) |

Ah. So this is a mobile device not tied to a specific geographic location ........ like a railway post office. It officially cancels a stamp so that it can enter the mails directly and not be further cancelled elsewhere.
I've never seen this anywhere.
Were I to collect these I'd also want the local show franking alongside it to identify the location, or use a show cover. |

After your last posting, I check again my stamps and the Cancellation is little different then the one you show there. Mine have the same graphic, maple leaf design but the text around is different: "CANDA PHILATELIQUE - PHILATELIC CANADA - MONTREAL" (all in blue shade ink)I think that mine is 15-20 years ago... and could have change after.... but to have more information we should contact the Lake Shore stamp club, in Dorval. I know they have a specialist in cancellation M. François Brisse, he is also a ccancellationddesigner he is a well kknownCanadian specialist in this category. Hope I help a little. (He is the responsible for the next "ROYAL 2011" stamp show) |

Thanks for the link Bee See. I got carried away a bit and thought maybe not all who might know might not be reading this Marine Life thread.
I am thinking, time permitting, I want to scan all the booklets I have, and my friend's (here now) at high resolution, (600, 800, 1200 dpi) so if / when they are gone I will be able to study them and compare the dot patterns especially.
Right now I like the colour shifts as they are easier to see.

As a point of curiousity I had emailed Jay Smith and Associates (previously mention in this thread on the Sweden ladybug issues) asking about Swedish marine life booklets and whether they had the same cylinder and serial numbers appearing as the Canada booklets had. His response: = = = = = = = Thanks for your note regarding the Sweden marine life issue. Here's what I have in stock at the moment: Of the Swedish issue: all of these at $16.25 each Cylinder 1 Cylinder 2 KN number KN + cylinder 2 spine print It is highly probable, but not guaranteed, that KN + cylinder 1 as well as spine print with other combinations exist. = = = = = = = He also has the Canada booklets in stock some with numbers and 'spine prints' / counting marks/tabs. http://www.jaysmith.com/ |

Puzzler, your new layout in Post 1 looks great, including the tilde for the none existent items . I have a few more numbers to add when I get home. I checked the Jay Smith site and it is a bit of a pain to navigate and is without a search box (I couldn't find one anyway). Does he list the Canadian or Swedish booklets on the website, or did he just give you the information in an e-mail? |

Bee See, He actually emailed me. I looked myself and couldn't find any search feature. The Scandinavian Price Lists button and then the Sweden button takes you to lots of stamps bot no 2010 booklets. No Canada anywhere. Full contact info: e-mail: js@JaySmith.com mailto:js@JaySmith.com website: http://www.JaySmith.comJay Smith & Associates P.O.
