Looks like a legit R53a. But I'm aware these are often faked by shaving off the perfs. How much margin is enough? Would this one pass?

Trimmed, almost certainly from a part perf. Truthfully, I have never been convinced that stamp actually exists imperf. The best example I have ever seen might still have been trimmed. I have never seen one wide enough to have some design from the next stamp on both sides.

Interesting. I looked more closely at the PF cert search. I see now that all the recent singles were given "not a Scott 53a". Many, looking much better than mine. There is a vertical imperf pair there that they did certify.

It does not pass the smell test with me. At that price differential I would be very suspicious.

No, this stamp will never receive a certificate as a genuine R53a.

As far as I am concerned, none of those appear genuine.

i dont know anything about this stamp, but all 15 of those are sus includinng the one above. They all look cut, and I am appalled they have passing certs. I can never tell who to get mad at. lol - The expertizers, the sellers or the catalog.
Red flags everywhere here. For me I'd need way bigger margins for the adjacent stamp. Sorry.

I have 4 examples: 1 definitely bogus, 1 iffy that could go either way, 1 with a good pf cert, and 1 "we'll never know for sure" with a pf declined opinion.

Definitely bogus:

Iffy:

We'll never know for sure:

Good pf cert. Exact same cancel as cert #179017, also a good cert.

Yes we do; it was cut to fit the document, a not uncommon occurrence. And cert 179017 is a manuscript cancel, and would not get a cert today. It was done probably 50 years ago, so who knows who looked at it. As I have said before, they are ALL iffy.
