I recently came across these 4 stamps of Newfoundland. I find early Newfoundland stamps very hard to identify. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You may want to use the word "Newfoundland" in your post and have the post moved to the Candian Stamps topic instead of "Introduce Yourself Here".

Thanks rogdcam! I'm losing it! I didn't realize where I had posted this.

Thank you for sharing, you are in the right place now.

A few comments.

It is a little challenging to tell because your scans are not super clear. And on the first two, it appears to say "orange" but I can't read the wording on the other ones. It might help for a little context--are these mounted on a page in an album or loose sheets? Knowing some general background as to how you found them might help. Meaning if you bought an album from XYZ or just found these in the attic. If I were in your shoes, I might also gently remove them from their mounting as the backs can tell you something (like watermarks) and allow for a better scan. But do so at your risk, so might also just leave them as is.

That said, my knee jerk view is that these might be valuable; though there are many forgeries of these stamps. I might be wrong but here is what I think:

1. The first stamp is probably the 4 pence orange variety of Unitrade #12 (NSSC #12). From 1860. Appears to be mint (or unused). There is a more valuable variety with a watermark which you might be able to see by looking at the back at a bright light. "Stacey Wise 1858" is the watermark.

2. The second stamps might be the 6 pence orange variety; Unitrade #13 (NSSC #14). From 1860 also. Appears to be used (ie canceled). Check watermark also

3. The third stamp might be the 4 pence, scarlet vermillion; Unitrade #4 (NSSC #5?). From 1857, so older. No watermark. Appears mint

4. The fourth stamp might be the 6 pence, scarlet vermilion; Unitrade #6 (NSSC #7?) From 1857, no watermark. Appears mint.

If these are genuine, then the might be quite valuable....like more than $10,000. Thus I would want to know the context or provenance. If you want to be sure, then you might want to send to an expert for authenticity and a certificate.

Thanks for sharing--any more Newfoundland stamps?

Thanks, Tommy. I will try to see what info I can come up with. They were actually given to me by a friend . I have quite a few Newfoundland stamps but not this old. I don't think I would pay much attention to the word "orange" although it might be correct.
